Henry Hughes Instructed in High Profile Paralympian Death Corporate Manslaughter and Gross Negligence Manslaughter Case

3 June 2026

One of the most high-profile health and safety prosecutions of the year following the tragic death of a Paralympian in the 2017 Paralympics. Corporate manslaughter and Gross Negligence Manslaughter charges were brought against UKA and a ‘senior employee’ who was initially blamed. Henry Hughes, together with Mark Balyzs KC, represented the employee who had been subject to an eight-year investigation. The Gross Negligence Manslaughter allegation carried potentially catastrophic consequences.

Following some months the prosecution agreed to offer no evidence on that serious charge and a plea was entered to a health and safety offence. A trial was avoided and comprehensive mitigation advanced. The client was sentenced to a mid level community order.
