18 July 2025

Gregory Wedge leading Satya Chotalia secured sentences for all 10 individuals involved in the infamous disorder on Southend Seafront between two rival gang groups which occurred in July 2024. The defendants, aged between 15 and 19, were given prison sentences totalling 34 years at Basildon Crown Court.

All defendants in this case engaged in pre-planned violence which saw them travel from London via train to Southend; armed with knives, machetes and a firearm which had been modified to discharge ammunition. This firearm was discharged in close proximity to members of the public during confrontations between the two groups. At least two were seriously injured during the confrontations, with one airlifted to the Royal London Hospital with a serious stab wound.

In sentencing Her Honour Judge Cohen remarked that “‘The calm of the afternoon was broken… There was what can only be described as a running battle in Southend”

One group had spoken in a group chat about bringing knives and guns to Southend to meet out violence to other rival gang members.

Social media footage of the incident was shared on all major national news platforms. The Court heard through the course of submissions during the hearing how the incident had cost the public purse £620,000 and also heard from members of the Southend community who detailed the extreme impact this incident had upon the community.

Greg and Satya were instructed by the CPS Complex Casework Unit, East of England
