Greg Unwin Acting for Father on Trial for Murdering his Child who Died from Complications 14 years After the Assault

22 October 2026

Greg Unwin, led by Allison Summers KC and instructed by Romana Khan of Solomons Solicitors, is representing a father the Central Criminal Court who denies murdering his son.

The child, born eight weeks premature, was four months old when he was taken to hospital in December 2007 with a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain and a fractured arm and ribs. In 2009 the father pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent, writing to the sentencing judge that he “never intended for all this to happen”. He received a sentence of Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP). After his eventual release he was deported to Germany where he and the mother remained married and had a new baby together.

The injured child developed cerebral palsy and lived in foster care the ensuing years until he died in December 2021, aged 14. No extradition proceedings were instigated but the father was

arrested at Heathrow in December 2025, in transit from Germany to Barbados.

The child’s mother in Germany did not respond to requests to attend the trial. The various accounts she gave over eighteen years, including in police interviews as a suspect, in care proceedings before the family court and in a sworn deposition, were read to the jury as hearsay.

Giving evidence, the father admitted shaking and flinging his infant son to the floor in anger but denied intending really serious harm. He said he pleaded guilty in 2009 so that the case against his wife would be dropped. The prosecution challenges his account. The trial continues.
